Mini-Book for Home Practice!

Creating a mini-book is a fun and hands-on way to help reinforce target vocabulary in speech therapy. Plus, it gives kids a special book they can take home for extra practice! Here's how to make one and use it during your sessions.

What You’ll Need:

  • One sheet of paper (8.5" x 11")

  • Scissors

  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

  • Glue or glue sticks

  • Pictures of your target words or concepts

Step 1: Fold the Mini-Book

  1. First fold: Fold the paper in half lengthwise (like a hotdog).

  2. Second fold: Open it up and then fold it in half widthwise (like a hamburger).

  3. Third fold: Fold it widthwise one more time.

  4. Unfold it all—you should see eight equal sections from the creases.

Step 2: Cut the Paper

  1. Fold the paper in half lengthwise again.

  2. Using scissors, cut along the center crease, starting from the folded edge and stopping in the middle (you’ll end up with a slit in the center of the paper).

Step 3: Form the Book

  1. Open the paper and fold it in half widthwise.

  2. Hold the edges and gently push the sides together. The slit in the center will open into a diamond shape.

  3. Keep pushing until it folds into a little book with six pages, plus a front and back cover.

Using the Mini-Book in Speech Therapy

  1. Choose Your Target Words:
Pick the vocabulary words or concepts you’re focusing on for the session.

  2. Add Pictures:
Have the child glue a picture of each target word onto a page. They can also color and decorate to make it their own.

  3. Talk About It:
As you work on each page, talk about the word. What does it mean? Can they use it in a sentence? Maybe even act it out!

Sending the Mini-Book Home

Once the mini-book is complete, send it home for extra practice. Encourage parents to:

  • Read through the book with their child.

  • Talk about the pictures and words.

  • Find real-life examples of the words at home.

This is a great way to reinforce what they learned and help with carryover. Plus, kids love showing off their creations!

We use these mini-books with the words from our Habla Palabra Series 1 and Series 2 Workbooks.
