We’re continuing our series on bilingualism and autism.
There is still a common belief among both parents and professionals that if a child is autistic, hearing or learning more than one language will be “too much.”
But research continues to show that bilingualism does NOT harm, reduce, or slow down language development in autistic children.
Kaylie Holke’s review article also highlights something many families already know from experience - the real challenge is often not bilingualism, but lack of access to bilingual supports and services. When families do not have access to bilingual supports and services, they may feel less confident using their home language, even when they want to maintain it. For professionals, supporting bilingualism means giving families practical support to continue using their home language.
Some of the benefits highlighted in the article include:
• additional practice with social language rule sets
• stronger connections with family and community
• increased ability to transition during change
• greater flexibility in problem-solving

We’re highlighting topics related to autism and bilingualism and wanted to share one of our favorite articles by Henry Angulo-Jiménez (2018), which answers common questions families often have about raising an autistic child in a bilingual environment.
The research is clear: bilingualism does not harm language development in autistic children.
We’ve linked the article in our bio, and the Spanish version will be up tomorrow!

Pilar is in California this week attending Convergence @cshaorg
She’s ready and registered for her sessions - she is going to divide and conquer with her conference buddies to get as much information as possible!
If you’re at the convention and see her, say hi! She brought some Habla Cadabra swag to share.
We love opportunities like this to learn and it’s been so fun to check out other state conferences too!
Are you attending any conferences this year? What sessions have been the most helpful for you? Any ones coming up you are excited about?
Yesterday I was at the post office when an older couple turned around and asked if I spoke Spanish. They wanted to make sure they got some important mail to El Salvador and asked if I would stay with them during their transaction. I was happy to be a support.
Growing up, my grandparents didn’t speak English. My grandfather had a stroke that left him unable to speak, and I struggled to figure out how to connect with him. We both lacked a way to express ourselves to each other, so our communication was mostly sitting next to each other, holding hands, and sharing glances.
For a long time, I thought my relationship with my grandmother might end up similar. She tried hard! Always gesturing, offering me food, and ready to give me a hug. Once I started learning Spanish, we began connecting in more ways. I got to experience her humor, her insight, and her little roasts of my aunts and uncles. She would whisper small requests to me, and I could sneak her favorite snacks when it became harder for her to move around.
I got to experience my grandmother as her authentic self.
Speaking more than one language gave me access to those moments.
Bilingualism isn’t just gaining more vocabulary or grammar. It’s connection, culture, personality, and belonging.
That belief is a big part of why we create Spanish therapy resources at Habla Cadabra SLP. When children lose access to their home language, they can lose opportunities to connect with their families and their communities. They lose the chance to fully express themselves—and for their families to fully express themselves to them.
Supporting bilingual language development helps keep those connections alive, and that’s why this work matters so much to us.

Headed to #TSHA2026 in Fort Worth? We’ve gathered some of our favorite convention tips to help you save money, save time, and enjoy your conference experience!
🚗 Parking Tip:
Downtown street parking is free after 6 PM on weekdays and free all day Saturday. There are also smaller nearby lots that are often cheaper than the convention garage.
🍔 Lunch + Recharge Tip:
If you want to skip long convention food lines, consider ordering food to the convention center entrance and walking over to the #fortworthwatergardens for a quiet reset. It’s also a short walk from @sons_coffee if you need an afternoon caffeine boost.
🛍️ Exhibit Hall Strategy:
Plan time to wander and talk to exhibitors — some of our favorite convention friendships and professional connections have started this way. If you’re attending, come visit @hablacadabraslp at Booth 302 — we’d love to meet you and show you our Spanish therapy materials!
👟 Comfort Matters:
Wear comfortable shoes… the convention center is BIG and you will walk a lot.
🌙 Evening Fun:
If you have time, visit the Stockyards! Some of our favorite spots include @aticoftworth , @cattlemenssteakhousefortworth , @melticecreams, and @secondrodeobrewing. Great food, live music, and fun Fort Worth vibes.
If you prefer to stay downtown, the area is walkable and safe in our experience. Evening street parking is free, and many restaurants — especially near @sundancesquare — offer garage parking validation. We’ve enjoyed a great post-convention dinner @istanbulgrill.bar !!
✨ We don’t have any affiliations with these locations — just sharing favorites as frequent attendees (and slightly local!) We’ve linked all locations to Google Maps in our blog (check the link in our bio) for easy saving.

One way to add specific targets without losing the play 💕
In the last reel, I shared how open-ended materials support imagination and language.
Here, I’m showing how to use Habla Verbos to give that play a clear language target while still keeping it flexible and child-led.
Start by pre-selecting verbs and having the child choose a small set to act out. Acting out the verbs helps make sure the meaning is clear before we ask for full sentences or specific verb endings. Model and take turns as needed, especially for less familiar actions.
Once the child is ready, we shift into expressive practice. Decide on present or past tense, choose the pronoun that matches the character, and practice the verbs with the target ending. This is where modeling, recasting, and gentle corrective feedback come in.
Then the loose parts come back in one at a time! We add an item that goes with the verb and turn it into a simple sequence that we can build on in later sessions. Gradually adding toys helps prevent kids from feeling overwhelmed or jumping from item to item, and instead supports deeper engagement.
This is just one way to use Habla Verbos. Interested in more? Leave a comment and tell us!

This basket shows up in more therapy sessions than you’d think!
Loose parts, a concept that comes from play-based learning in early childhood, are open-ended materials that can be moved, combined, and used in many different ways.
In therapy, a simple basket of loose parts can go a long way. Random toys, fabric scraps, felt, and different textures give children space to decide what something is and what happens next. That flexibility supports imagination and naturally creates opportunities for language and verb use.
I like keeping washable or disposable fabric in different colors and textures to use as backgrounds or props. Depending on the child and the direction of the play, one piece might be water, grass, a road, or a blanket.
If you’re looking for simple, low-prep ways to support language, grammar, and play, keep an eye on our feed. An Habla Verbos activity is coming soon!

Just let me spend 30 minutes getting ready for it first 😆
We’ve been reflecting on what feels grounding and energizing this year. Not pumping out sessions, but reconnecting with the parts of this work we truly love.
As we get back into the swing of things, here are 5 things we are looking forward to:
1. Catching up on speech research. I deleted IG from my phone during the holidays/move and getting back to our account I am seeing so many announcement of studies, new resources, and research articles that I cant wait to read.
2. Organizing my materials. Moving has given me the opportunity to sort materials and I’ve been tagging and boxing items into different units. I love being able to build on content from one session to the next so having these sorted in advance is making me excited.
3. Creating bilingual lesson plans. I want to make a focused effort to create more Spanish lesson plans and activities. My last two school contracts were not bilingual placements and I’ve missed working consistently in Spanish so much! I’m searching for bilingual positions and building materials for that.
4. Prepping for TXSHA! Pilar and I will be in Fort Worth next month at booth 302. We look forward to connecting with other SLPs and getting to know more about your work!
5. Starting a new position. Leaving such a strong network in Houston made me a little nervous, but I love the flexibility and job opportunities this field affords. Looking forward to finding new connections and having the opportunity to work with more kiddos soon.

Life lately has looked a little different.
We stepped away from work, slowed things down, and focused on family, food, and some big personal transitions. This time away reminded us how much life outside the therapy room shapes how we show up inside it.
Here’s a small peek at what our holidays looked like:
Jacqui moved! 13 years as a Houston-based SLP and shifting to DFW - still Texas, but each city has its own BIG culture and vibe.
Pilar traveled! A good two weeks in Colombia with family and friends. A little tumble, but having time with food, a cooking class, and friends and family was the great reset for the year.

We delivered this training to a packed room at this year’s Texas Speech Language and Hearing convention. It was a joy to discuss the importance of attachment and regulation in intervention.
Our team hosted a seminar for a group of bilingual speech language pathologists to discuss different CAS interventions as well as considerations for bilingual children. We were happy to have several virtual attendees as well!
